چکیده
In this work, we explore the influence of grain size distribution (GSD) on density, connectivity and internal forces distributions, for both 2D 3D granular packings built mechanically. For power law GSDs, show that there is an exponent which density are optimized, close to those characterize other well known GSDs such as Fuller Thompson Appollonian packing. addition, studied distributions normal forces, finding these can be described by a power-law tail, specially with large span. These results highlight role GSD structure suggest important consequences macroscopic properties.

Force distributions in three-dimensional granular assemblies: effects of packing order and interparticle friction.
We present a systematic investigation of the distribution of normal forces at the boundaries of static packings of spheres. A method for the efficient construction of large hexagonal-close-packed crystals is introduced and used to study the effect of spatial ordering on the distribution of forces. Under uniaxial compression we find that the form for the probability distribution of normal forces...
متن کاملEmergence of Gamma distributions in granular materials and packing models.
We study the distribution of volume fluctuations in experiments and numerical simulations concerning equal-sized sphere packings prepared with different techniques. We show that the distribution of the local volumes (Voronoï cells) and also the distributions of the global volumes (whole samples) follow remarkably well a shifted and rescaled Gamma distribution that we name a k-Gamma distribution...
متن کاملPacking geometry and statistics of force networks in granular media.
The relation between packing geometry and force network statistics is studied for granular media. Based on simulations of two-dimensional packings of Hertzian spheres, we develop a geometrical framework relating the distribution of interparticle forces P(f) to the weight distribution P(w), which is measured in experiments. We apply this framework to reinterpret recent experimental data on stron...
متن کاملSpace Defragmentation Heuristic for 2D and 3D Bin Packing Problems
One of main difficulties of multi-dimensional packing problems is the fragmentation of free space into several unusable small parts after a few items are packed. This study proposes a defragmentation technique to combine the fragmented space into a continuous usable space, which potentially allows the packing of additional items. We illustrate the effectiveness of this technique on the twoand t...
متن کاملConvective Flow in a Horizontally Vibrated 3D Granular Packing
We report experimental observations of a horizontally vibrated granular medium made out of sand grains. For large enough acceleration, two counter-rotating convection rolls appear in the upper part of the granular packing, whereas the bed remains unperturbed in the lower part. For increasing acceleration, the free surface exhibits different shapes: slight dome, two ridges and single roof. A qua...
